Vermeer Introduces Its Largest Stump Cutter Yet, The Gasoline-Powered SC1052
Vermeer recently unveiled its new SC1052 wheeled stump cutter, currently the largest in its product line. With a straight-line cutting width of 72 inches (183 centimeters), the beltless machine can remove a 6-foot (1.8-meter) stump without changing its position. The stump grinder’s 115-horsepower (86-kilowatt) Origin engine runs on gasoline rather than diesel fuel.
“The Vermeer SC1052 stump cutter is the next generation of large stump cutters,” says Josh Vrieze, senior product manager for Vermeer Environmental Equipment. “Diesel emission regulations impacted the production of 100-plus horsepower stump cutters, including our popular Vermeer SC1152 stump cutter unit.
“To fill this void in the market, our team designed a new economic gas engine model that will meet the performance levels tree care professionals expect,” Vrieze continues. “The SC1052 complements many of our customers' gas engine fleets, as they have started operating more gas-powered chippers and trucks in recent years.”
The Vermeer SC1052’s Cutting Performance
The Vermeer SC1052 has a 26-in. (66-cm) cutter wheel with 33 teeth. The new Vermeer cutting system (VCS) is a mounting and retention structure that helps keep teeth from shifting in the pocket better than a mounting bolt, according to the manufacturer. Its double-sided, V-profile carbide cutter teeth can be flipped to the other side of the wheel when one side loses its sharpness.
The SC1052 can grind up to 31 in. (78 cm) above ground level and 25 in. (63.5 cm) below the surface. For greater reach, its cylinder and 4-bar linkage hold the cutter wheel out and away from the machine as its boom descends. This geometry provides a wide cutting range and reduces the need to move the machine. Its noise level during operation is 111 dB(A).
Vermeer’s SmartSweep control system monitors the engine load while cutting to maintain a consistent cutter wheel sweep rate and protect the machine. For safety, the cutter wheel disengages if the operator releases the control handles during operation. After the grinding process, the operator can use the SC1052’s 34-in (86-cm) hydraulic chip blade to spread the wood chips or gather them for removal.
The Vermeer SC1052’s All-Terrain Capabilities
When equipped with its dual wheels, the SC1052 is 56 in. (142 cm) in width, but the outer wheels can be removed to allow the stump grinder to fit through a 36-in. (91.4-cm) residential gate. The machine has full-time four-wheel drive and differential locks for extra traction. Its top travel speed is 140 ft (42.7 m) per minute.
The SC1052’s access panels can be removed without tools. Maintenance can be further aided with the use of Vermeer’s telematics system. Optional accessories for the stump cutter include a full-function remote control for use away from the 3-position operator station.
