About Excavator Mulchers

Hyundai HX300AL Excavator Mulcher
As with skid-steer, track, and wheel mulchers, excavator mulchers are a type of mulcher used in forestry, land clearing, land reclamation, commercial and residential construction, oil and gas pipeline projects, wildlife restoration, conservation, and other applications across numerous industries. Mulchers greatly reduce the manpower and time otherwise required to clear underbrush, trees, and other vegetation, a job that historically has involved several people operating a combination of feller bunchers, skidders, forwarders, and other equipment to cut, arrange, and then remove the material from a jobsite. Conversely, mulchers return the trees, stumps, and vegetation they shred back to the ecosystem for decomposition.
Distinctions & Advantages
While other mulchers types generally feature a front-mounted mulcher head incorporating a wide horizontal shaft that moves along at or near ground level, excavator mulchers typically use a narrower mulcher attachment, or head, mounted to the excavator’s boom. Similar to a rotary chipping drum, the head uses either fixed teeth or swinging hammers to break down material. These machines’ use of a long, extendable boom means they can reach some vegetation more easily, and can mulch standing trees from the top down. They may, however, be more limited in the size of tree they can mulch.
Beyond Mulching
Unlike front-mounted mulchers, Excavator mulchers are well-suited for work on steeper grades, and with their swinging boom, they’re often a better option than heavier, dedicated mulchers where disrupting soil is a concern. Flexibility is another chief benefit of an excavator mulcher, as it’s relatively easy for an operator to exchange the mulching head for a bucket or other attachment, thereby equipping the excavator to do a variety of other types of jobs.
