“Sawmill” is a term that refers to any machine, facility, or company that cuts, mills, or processes raw wood into finished planks of lumber. When referring to a modern machine designed to handle this task, the term “portable” is usually appended. A portable sawmill can be any device that converts logs into finished planks. These tend to employ large circular blades or band-style blades, depending on the design of the sawmill. Sawmills are also sometimes referred to as “slasher saws.”

Types Of Sawmills

There are two primary types of sawmills: The traditional design involves moving the log, commonly with a conveyor belt or trolley, toward a stationary circular saw blade that forms the planks. More modern sawmills tend to favor a design that keeps the log stationary, and moves the bandsaw-style saw blade and motor component (called the “head”) along the length of the log to form planks. Slasher saws tend to refer to sawmills with a chain-and-bar cutting mechanism, which looks like (and effectively is) a large chainsaw that lets the operator cut the logs to length. Most portable sawmills are small enough to feature an axle and wheel for towing by a truck or other vehicle, though some are only portable in sections.
