Some wheeled stump grinders/stump cutters are single-axle units with a hitch for pulling behind another vehicle. These towable or tow-behind models are ready to pull to the jobsite without needing to be loaded and unloaded like a self-propelled unit on a trailer. That said, towed grinders may not be as easy to manoeuvre through residential gates and other tight spaces as self-propelled stump cutters, which are available in both wheel and track varieties.

Towable stump grinders typically use a cutting wheel with an automatic side-to-side sweeping motion to remove stumps and root balls rather than a vertical auger. They may drive their disc using hydraulic power, a belt and clutch, or other means. Like their self-propelled brethren, they may come with remote controls, LCD displays, or swingout controls for the operator’s use.

Built into a two-wheel trailer, a tow-behind stump cutter may feature electric brakes, LED brake lights, and other common upgrades. Many have telescoping or otherwise extendable tongues and manual or hydraulic jack stands to keep them level when disconnected from the towing vehicle.
