    About Tub Grinders

    DuraTech 6010 Tub Grinder

Tub Grinders are used in forestry and logging operations to break down organic debris, such as stumps, logs, and brush, into usable materials such as mulch, to repurpose leftover material rather than hauling it to a landfill or burning it for disposal. They get their name from the shape of their infeed hopper, a large round tub, usually about 3 to 4.25 metres (10 to 14 feet) in diameter and about 1.8 m (6 ft) deep, though smaller models can sometimes be found as well.

    Tub Grinders At Work

A cylindrical hammermill at the base of the tub is the primary grinding mechanism. One of the most common styles of hammermill is a “pin and plate” with a primary drive shaft, mill plates, rods, and hammers. Rolled steel screen plates sit below the hammermill. Holes in the screens, often somewhere between 1.2 to 15.2 centimetres (.5 to 6 inches) across, allow material that has reached the desired size to pass through. From there, a conveyor belt or auger transports the product away. Some tub grinders also come with a cover to prevent material from flying out during operation.

    Primary Differentiators

Tub grinders are set apart by three main features: the engine, the size and type of the mill, and the tub diameter. The amount of material that a tub grinder can hold at one time and the power of the grinder impact the length of time required to work through a given amount of material. Grinders on the smaller end can produce around 15.3 cubic metres (20 yards) of finished product an hour, while large models can produce several hundred metres per hour.
